Supporting Access to Relevant and Trustworthy Media
KGNU advances a more equitable, just, and environmentally sustainable society that ensures all peoples’ access to and participation in independent media.
Providing Independent Media Access
We provided a grant and continue to provide internet access and hotspots so KGNU can work directly in the community.
KGNU is an independent, noncommercial community radio station licensed in Boulder and Denver, Colorado. They seek to stimulate, educate, and entertain, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals, groups, issues, and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media.
We provided them with a grant that helps cover their general operating costs. In addition, we supply them with hotspots and internet service that is critical in their ability to get out of the studio and into the community to take part in community events.
The 35 Mile Foundation's support of KGNU Community Radio has been transformational for the implementation of our vision to build a new and modern community media center in Boulder County that amplifies community voices, culture, and music across the Colorado Front Range and beyond. We are grateful for their commitment and generous partnership with local community-centered media and digital equity initiatives to support engaged and informed communities dedicated to building a better world.

KGNU’s Aspirations
The Boulder Community Broadcast Association, Inc., the operator of KGNU, envisions an actively engaged global community rooted in mutual respect, working together to advance a more equitable, just, and environmentally sustainable society that ensures all peoples’ access to and participation in independent media.
Facilitating access to independent community media is a form of digital equity that’s not immediately apparent. Yet, we believe the services that KGNU offers to under-represented communities and people fits with our goal of promoting equitable participation in today’s society.
Project Goals
Digital equity includes media of many types, with community radio being one that provides civic-minded people with a reliable source of information. Through our fiscal support and by providing hotspots and internet service, we are supplying key foundational components needed to deepen their connections in the communities they serve.
